where we are right now

“Brett, myself and Indy (the dog) are a family so you aren’t straying too far from family photography! :)”

Lisa wasn’t taking no for an answer and I’m glad she didn’t.  In her first email she asked if I would take engagement photos for herself and Brett.   In my response I politely turned her down, telling her that I do family work almost exclusively these days.  She began her second email by telling me that she and Brett were “really laid back and not looking for any elaborate setting, just some pictures to capture where we are right now.”  Then she ended with the quote above, reminding me that family can mean a lot of things and I felt like a doofus.  These are clearly my people and I almost let them go.

My initial “no” had more to do with my own prejudice and fears, really.  Yes, its been a long time since we have done a wedding.  And most wedding photography I see these days is so… slick.  I see fashionable couples in fashionable lighting being very… fashionable and hip.  This will make me sound my age but having been married for 15 years and counting, we’ve been through some of the really awful “for worse”  parts described in popular wedding vows.  The vast majority of our time together has been “for better,” no doubt, but there have been days that almost broke me, almost broke us.   I married my best friend, the love of my life and still…. this marriage thing is hard.  I look at the couples in their cooler-than-you photos and I can’t help but wonder if they have the chops for it.   Its silly to judge because Sam and I were just as naive and hopeful and fun.  But from where I sit now, I just wasn’t sure I could do something hip.  My hipness has long since passed.

But Lisa and Brett weren’t asking for that.  Not for their engagements and not for wedding pics.  While the setting actually was elaborate for the wedding (absolutely gorgeous at Herrington on the Bay), they let us capture who they are where they are right now, simple as that.  IMO, its far more honest and beautiful and I’m glad we were given the opportunity.

Congratulations, y’all.  Thanks for not giving up on me.  I’m glad you asked us and we loved being part of it.  Being a family starts somewhere….

The photos you and Sam took at our wedding are still among my most favorite and cherished possessions. For exactly the reasons you articulate – there was nothing “slick” or set up about them – you captured us, our friends and family, and our day just as it was that day; and it was/is just perfect just the way it was. I’m hopeful this couple will feel the same way for years and years to come.

Hi Wendy – Couldn’t agree with you more! We were so lucky as well to have Mel & Sam capture our wedding. She totally “got” us on our first meeting and I’m already in love with just the preview photos we have. Brett and I will certainly cherish our wedding photos forever…they already just feel so genuine and capture the joy of us, our family and friends.

Love you Mel! Hopefully we can get together soon, we definitely owe you and Sam some beer garden drinks! I’d love to hear of the nonsense you witnessed and photographed at our wedding! Was so excited and blessed to have you there with us! xoxo
